I am the son of a refugee who came to the UK in 1956. She never taught me Hungarian and now we don't live near one another. I have two baby girls and would like them to learn the language so that they can connect with their past. I live in Hatfield, in Hertfordshire, about 20 minutes out of Kings Cross.
Is there anyone who could teach me or help me find a nanny/babysitter for my children that could speak to them in Hungarian?
I would have interest in taking some Hungarian lessons too. I live in Swindon now, but moving to Cirencester in September. Let me know what you guys find out.
Your best bet is an evening course at SSEES UCL (School of Slavonic and East European Studies, University College London). http://www.ssees.ucl.ac.uk/languageunit/evening.htm
They have some truly excellent teachers there.

The only advice I can offer until you source a nanny/baby sitter is buy a Berlitz Hungarian phrase book and dictionary. It contains the basics which would be suitable to teach 2 baby girls .. greetings, colours, numbers and more complex sentences. It is only £5 and contains over 1,200 words and phrases (including the pronunciation of the alphabet) and can be ordered on the internet from the Berlitz Publications website. This would get you started! Best wishes Shan
Some more help ,, whilst browsing amazon ,, they had mistakenly? put up a review by somebody saying 'don't both to buy cd language courses, download free from the web - what a nice helpful chap! I have downloaded a simple course from Byki ,, which is really fun - it involves flash card learning (excellent for children and me!) you hear the words spoken, cards flip between english and hungarian ,, really simple and great fun !
The download link is http://www.byki.com/fls/free-hungarian-software-download.html?l=hun...
Hello Nicholas... I stumbled across some CD's on Amazon.com a while back, that taught people how to speak Hungarian. Maybe you coud try there :) I speak Hungarian, cant write it tho, except for a small handful of words, and can read only a little, altho I do try to stumble and fumble my way thru letters that still come from my Aunty in Hungary. Im still very lucky I have my wonderful mother to converse with. Cheers from Down Under!
